September is a month with a lot going on! Make sure to set aside time to rest and recharge. We have just the thing to get your mind off your busy schedule during your evening wind down, good books!

Maybe you’re in the mood for a deep dive into family relationships and parenting with “Little Fires Everywhere”, or maybe you’re looking for something a little more out of this world. Our September reading recommendations are sure to spark your interests.

You might be wondering, why did Hutchinson Public LIbrary start a blog for reading recommendations? The answer is, we have our book clubs to thank. We see a lot of compelling, fun, and sometimes odd books while curating selection lists for our book clubs. The thing they all have in common is that they are all too good not to share!

This month’s reading recommendations are inspired by books that have been made into movies, TV shows or other forms of entertainment.

Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng

September Salt City Readers Book

Celeste Ng has written three novels including this one. Her debut novel was “Everything I Never Told You” and her most recent release is “Our Missing Hearts.”

“Little Fires Everywhere” is suburban American fiction. The book has a meticulously planned storyline with every detail placed with obvious purpose according to reviews from Book Marks.

The story is unique in that it is about motherhood and adolescence at the same time. It’s quite emotional and gripping at times. The story will take you on a journey exploring right and wrong, how a parent’s decisions can unintentionally affect children as they grow into adulthood, and so much more.

This title has also been adapted as a TV series on the streaming service Hulu. If you’ve seen it, we’d be curious to hear your thoughts on it and the book at our next Salt City Reader’s meeting. We meet the Third Wednesday of every month at 6pm at Hutchinson Public LIbrary.. If you’re interested in joining the Salt City Readers, you can sign up on our website or ask us next time you’re in the Library. Welcome to Night Vale by Joseph Fink

This book hits you with some serious Twilight Zone vibes. It’s hard to put it in one genre, which is why it’s outside of most people’s usual reading preferences. It brings mystery, science fiction, urban fantasy, and humor together for one novel.

Take a look at this excerpt from the book description:

Located in a nameless desert somewhere in the great American Southwest, Night Vale is a small town where ghosts, angels, aliens, and government conspiracies are all commonplace parts of everyday life. It is here that the lives of two women, with two mysteries, will converge.

After reading that, it’s hard to deny that the haunting theme songs of the Twilight Zone or the X-Files may have crossed your mind. The expert absolutely leaves us with a stream of questions. Questions that have to be answered! Aliens? Ghosts? Government Conspiracies? What is happening here? How can this be part of everyday life and how do the characters handle it?

If you’re looking for a break from conventional narratives and want to dive into a world that’s unlike anything you’ve encountered before, Welcome to Night Vale offers that escape. It’s a breath of fresh air in a literary landscape that can sometimes feel predictable.

Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah

You may be surprised to know that the Netflix show Firefly Lane is based on a book! Like most TV and film adaptations, there are notable differences between the book version and what you see on screen. However, the story is rather touching. It follows the lives of two women spanning over three decades, beginning with the start of their friendship as teens in 1974. Their relationship over the years is both heartwarming and turbulent.

This book has elements of historical fiction, romance, and drama.

Book Description:

Firefly Lane is for anyone who ever drank Boone’s Farm apple wine while listening to Abba or Fleetwood Mac. More than a coming-of-age novel, it’s the story of a generation of women who were both blessed and cursed by choices. It’s about promises and secrets and betrayals. And ultimately, about the one person who really, truly knows you—and knows what has the power to hurt you . . . and heal you. Firefly Lane is a story you’ll never forget . . . one you’ll want to pass on to your best friend.
