About the Makerspace

A picture of the HPL Makerspace, showing 3D printers, computers, and other creative machines.

The Hutchinson Public Library Makerspace is a public workshop-area that provides access to tools, materials, and skilled mentorship. It’s a fun, creative place for people to share and develop their abilities, explore their passions, and inspire others to do the same.

  • No experience required: The Makerspace is a place to learn. Staff are available to guide and provide input on your projects. This is a do-it-yourself space, though! Staff are here to assist – not complete projects on request.
  • Supplied materials: We keep a selection of materials available, such as 3D-printing filament, adhesive vinyl, printable fabric transfers, and plastic tiles for CNC carving. Some supplies are available for a charge, but we often have donated materials available, and you are welcome to bring compatible materials to use.
  • Location: The Makerspace is located in the basement of the Library. Use the central elevator and press the button labeled “Make”.
  • Availability: The Makerspace is available for walk-in use during library open hours – no appointment required. Please note: the Makerspace may not be available for general use during our workshops – check the schedule below. Machines are typically available on a first-come-first-served basis. You are encouraged to call before your visit to make sure equipment is available.
  • Group visits: Please contact us at least 2 weeks in advance to arrange a visit for your organization. The library’s Makerspace services are designed for individuals, and accommodations are required for groups.

The Library Makerspace is being funded in part by the generous endowment from the Arlene Jennings Trust, appointed to Hutchinson Public Library by Deborah L. Mosier.  Debbie was a teacher in the Hutchinson area.  We think she’d be proud of what we have started with her gift.

  • Makerspace Achievements Activity

The Makerspace Achievements activity is a seasonal challenge for makers of all ages. By completing creative challenges you can earn special stickers-badges to show off your accomplishments as a maker. Push your skills to a new level, learn about new skills and projects, and more!

There is no cost to participate in this activity, but we do charge for materials. Visit the Makerspace to pick up your activity sheet today!

    Frequently Asked Questions

    How precise is (this machine)?
Unfortunately, the demands of our Makerspace environment don’t allow for industrial or lab-quality conditions. We do our best given the circumstances, but if you need high-precision results, please consult Makerspace staff. 3D prints may have minor defects and stringing, CNC-router cuts may have small degrees of chatter, etc.

Are there volunteer opportunities for Makerspace?
We don’t yet have a general-purpose volunteer program. If there is a specific area you’re interested in, please contact us so we can discuss the possibilities.

    Where are restrooms located?
Public restrooms are on the 1st or 2nd floor of the library. There are no public restrooms in the basement level.

    Do you accept donations?
As of September 2025, we have paused accepting most donations due to our upcoming remodeling.
