SUMMARY:Pocket Paintings
DESCRIPTION:Why does the library host art programs for adults? \nThe simple answer is to promote life-long learning and literacy. Libraries act as “classrooms for life” for all ages\, allowing adults to learn what they want to learn in a low-pressure setting.   \nEngaging with the arts promotes cognitive health and stimulates the brain. Creative activities help adults stay mentally sharp\, boost memory\, and improve focus. While those are great individual benefits\, library art programs also create a shared space for learning\, chatting\, and growing together.  \nPocket paintings is a great art program for those with beginner and advanced skills. You’ll paint on a miniature canvas with guiding prompts. You can follow along\, or make your own creative decisions along the way. At the end you’ll have a miniature masterpiece created by you that’s perfect for displaying on a desk\, bookshelf\, or side table.  We’ll chat while we paint and listen to relaxing music. It’s a great environment to relax and let loose of life’s big stressors for a couple of hours. You’ll leave feeling relaxed\, accomplished\, and full of inspiration for your next project.  \nThis is a program for adults 18+ \nRegistration is required due to our limited space.  \nPlease reach out if you have any questions. Contact us by visiting the library or get in touch with our Adult Program Coordinator by calling 620-663-5441 ext. 123 or send an email to adult.program.coordinator@hutchpl.org.

SUMMARY:Virtual Author Talk with Marjan Kamali
DESCRIPTION:On Courage\, Turmoil\, and the Transformative Power of Love with Marjan Kamali\nInternationally Bestselling and Award-Winning Author of The Stationary Shop and Together Tea\nThursday\, May 7th 2026 at 6:00 PM CDT \n  \nRegister and Ask Questions Here \n  \nJoin us for an exciting conversation with internationally acclaimed author Marjan Kamali as we delve into the timeless wonder of her New York Times bestselling novel\, The Lion Women of Tehran.  \nIn 1950s Tehran\, seven-year-old Ellie lives in grand comfort until the untimely death of her father\, forcing Ellie and her mother to move to a tiny home downtown. Lonely and bearing the brunt of her mother’s endless grievances\, Ellie dreams for a friend to alleviate her isolation. \nLuckily\, on the first day of school\, she meets Homa\, a kind girl with a brave and irrepressible spirit. Together\, the two girls play games\, learn to cook in the stone kitchen of Homa’s warm home\, wander through the colorful stalls of the Grand Bazaar\, and share their ambitions of becoming “lion women.” \nBut their happiness is disrupted when Ellie and her mother are afforded the opportunity to return to their previous bourgeois life. Now a popular student at the best girls’ high school in Iran\, Ellie’s memories of Homa begin to fade. Years later\, however\, her sudden reappearance in Ellie’s privileged world alters the course of both of their lives. \nTogether\, the two young women come of age and pursue their own goals for meaningful futures. But as the political turmoil in Iran builds to a breaking point\, one earth-shattering betrayal will have enormous consequences. \nRegister now to hear directly from the author about the crafting of her tender\, yet immensely powerful work.  \nAbout the Author: \nMarjan Kamali\, born in Turkey to Iranian parents\, is the New York Times bestselling author of The Lion Women of Tehran\, The Stationery Shop\, and Together Tea. She is the 2022 recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing Award. Her books have been translated into over thirty languages. Marjan lives with her family in the Boston area.
