DESCRIPTION:Get ready for a novel movie night at the library! Join us for a cinematic adventure featuring libraries on the big screen—grab some popcorn and a drink\, then settle in for a good movie. \nCome for the films\, stay for the overdue puns! \nIn March we will be showing The Public\, a 2018 fictional film which takes place inside a Cincinnati public library during an usually cold arctic blast. \n\n\n\n\nn “the public” an unusually bitter Arctic blast has made its way to downtown Cincinnati and the front doors of the public library where the action of the film takes place. The story revolves around the library patrons\, many of whom are homeless\, mentally ill and marginalized\, as well as an exhausted and overwhelmed staff of librarians who often build emotional connections and a sense of obligation to care for those regular patrons. At odds with library officials over how to handle the extreme weather event\, the Patrons turn the building into a homeless shelter for the night by staging an “Occupy” sit in. What begins as an act of civil disobedience becomes a stand off with police and a rush-to-judgment media constantly speculating about what’s really happening. This David versus Goliath story tackles some of our nation’s most challenging issues\, homelessness and mental illness and sets the drama inside one of the last bastions of democracy-in-action: your public library\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOne of Cincinnati’s public libraries soon becomes an unlikely shelter for homeless people seeking warmth from the city’s cold weather. All hell breaks loose as the homeless begin barricading themselves in the library and the police are called in to try and defuse the situation. Writer and director Emilio Estevez’s carefully-crafted dramedy focuses on the story of two librarians\, a crisis negotiator\, a district attorney and the leader of the homeless as they become tied up in this act of civil disobedience.

DESCRIPTION:Stretching from Texas north into Canada\, the Great Plains region has generated its share of myths and stereotypes\, from the hardy pioneer farmer and the vanishing Indian to the Dust Bowl refugee.  It has also produced some of our finest writers and a rich literary tradition.  In this series\, readers will explore the historical and mythical legacies of the Plains and how they continue to shape perceptions of life in Kansas. \n\n The series continues with “O Pioneers!” by Willa Cather on Thursday\, April 24 at 6:00PM\, \n\n The discussion will be led by Dennis Etzel Jr. \n\n Dennis Etzel Jr. teaches English at Washburn University. He received his M.F.A. in Creative Writing from the University of Kansas. Dennis has two chapbooks\, The Sum of Two Mothers and My Graphic Novel and his work has been published in numerous publications and journals. In 2022\, he was awarded the John Doyle Klier Residency for the Writers Colony at Dairy Hollow\, Eureka Springs\, Arkansas. \n\n Books are available for check out at the Public Service Desk. SUMMARY:3D Printing Certification
DESCRIPTION:We will soon require training to use our 3D printing services. This introductory workshop covers basic information to perform 3D printing projects. Completing it gives you access to use our 3D printing equipment\, and you will make a small 3D print at no cost. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYou will need\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA current Hutchinson Public Library Card that belongs to you. You must bring this to the workshop.\nBasic computer and reading skills.\nA second visit to pick up your completed 3D print\n\n\nPlease remember:\n\nThere is no cost to attend.\nThere is not an age limit\, but you should be able to understand and follow written and verbal instructions\, as well as use a desktop computer.\nNo previous experience is required.\nSeats are limited\, but this workshop will be offered regularly. If you can’t attend a scheduled workshop\, please contact us to discuss alternatives.\nThe Makerspace will be closed to other activities during this workshop.\n\n \nAre you new to Makerspace? Haven’t attended orientation? Come to the Makerspace 30 minutes before the 3D Printing workshop for our Makerspace Orientation! You’ll learn what Makerspace is all about\, become familiar with our policies and services\, and meet fellow makers and creatives. This event will become the introduction for everyone using the library makerspace\, and may eventually be required. Get ready early by attending now! \n\nThere is no cost to attend\, but please bring your library card!\nThere is no age limit.\nRegistration is not required.\nThere is not a limit on attendance.\nThe Makerspace will be open during this workshop for non-disruptive projects.\nYou don’t need to attend the 3D Printing workshop to come to the orientation.
