The Genealogy collection is located on the second floor of the library. Patron assistance is provided by the Reference staff during regular library hours.
Simple requests for information, such as obituaries, directory assistance, and specific searches in local records, should be addressed to the Reference staff. Requests for in-depth research should be referred to the Reno County Genealogical Society at the following address:
Reno County Genealogical Society
PO Box 5
Hutchinson, KS 67504-0005
Please include as much information as possible in each request, such as surnames, first names, middle names (if possible), and dates of birth or death. You may also search the library catalog for newspaper articles, births, marriages, and obituaries. Search for a birth, marriage, or death type in "birth" and "last name", or marriage last name or obituary last name. To narrow down the search you may include the first name or initial. You may search the newspaper articles by a person's name, business name, or building and limit the search to abstract. Abstract will limit the search to just Reno County newspapers.
There is a subscription database within the library that may be used for genealogy research: Ancestry Library Edition. Heritage Quest is available within the library, or it may be accessed from other locations using a current Kansas Library Card.
The following sites are recommended for searching genealogy information. We also encourage you to take a look at the Reference Department blog and "check out" the latest topics concerning genealogy.
