THANK YOU EVERYONE! We had a great inaugural Cow Creek Book Festival. Look for it again in the Spring of 2013!
Wait - what happened to the Prairie Book Festival? The Prairie Book Festival went on something of a vision quest and wandered out onto the high plains in search of its identity. After much reflection and introspection it returned to us here in Hutchinson with a new date and a new name, but the same committment to providing a forum for local and regional Kansas authors to showcase their talent!
Along with the presentations by Kansas authors, we sponsored a 100 Word Fiction contest and Poetry contest.
Among the many authors we had here in Hutchinson to talk about their work and the craft of writing, we were honored to have Newbery Award-winning author Clare Vanderpool!
Ms. Vanderpool spoke at an Opening Event from 10:30-11:30am and autographed copies of her book from 11:30 until Noon in the library's auditorium. She talked about her Newbery book, Moon over Manifest and about writing in general. This was a great opportunity to listen to and learn from this nationally-recognized author.
Kirkus Starred Review for Moon Over Manifest:
When 12-year-old Abilene jumps off the train in Manifest, Kan., in 1936 to stay with her father's boyhood friend, little does she know her sojourn will take her back, via mesmerizing tales, newspaper clippings, curious mementos and World War I letters, to Manifest as it was in 1918 and into the life of the mysterious boy nicknamed Jinx. This young con man effected extraordinary change in the lives of the mostly immigrant residents and the fortunes of the mining town in that year. Abilene and readers get so caught up in the past in this richly detailed, splendidly written novel that they easily make the transition between the Depression and WWI eras and long to learn more about the town that once was. Readers will love guessing how Abilene's dad fits into all the stories and townspeople's memories. The absolute necessity of story as a way to redemption and healing past wounds is at the heart of this beautiful debut, and readers will cherish every word up to the heartbreaking yet hopeful and deeply gratifying ending.
Outdoor events includde the following authors speaking at 30 minute intervals from noon to 6:00 p.m. They visited with participants throughout the afternoon and copies of their books were available for purchase and autographing.Afternoon schedule:
